Deciding post-secondary is a huge choice, but Algonquin College in Pembroke is offering to help with an open house to potential students.
The open house is held annually to help provide insight on a variety of programs, speak with current students and faculty to discover options available to all who apply.
Manager of community and student affairs Jodi Bucholtz says providing future students – no matter if they’re fresh out of high school, mature students, or students considering a career change – can attend the open house to get the full experience before deciding.
“We have interactive classroom sessions for students to come and experience an activity that would actually happen in the classroom,” she says. “And while touring the college you’re seeing what it’s like at the Pembroke campus.”
Along with promoting Algonquin to perspective students, Bucholtz says there will also be other representatives on hand to answer questions to help shape the future and learning opportunities of fresh minds.
“We will have 24 college representatives from across Ontario who will also be at our open house,” she says. “This is the perfect opportunity to come and experience the Pembroke campus and see what makes our campus different.”
The college offers a variety of programming suitable for everyone who applies, and Bucholtz says with 55 per cent of students coming from across Canada there’s a strong incentive to keep students in Pembroke and surrounding area.
“We have a lot of work integrated learning opportunities at the college,” she says. “That means a student might have a placement, a paid co-op, or community project. Learning just doesn’t happen in the classroom at the Pembroke campus; it happens in the community and in industry with employers.”
The open house starts on Oct. 26 at 11 a.m., and will host a variety of programs across Healthcare, Skilled Trades and Technology, Community Studies, and Environmental and Outdoor studies.
