The Renfrew County and District Health Unit is encouraging residents to get vaccinated against COVID-19, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus and pneumococcal disease ahead of the fall and winter respiratory illness season.
The health unit says those illnesses can lead to serious complications and hospitalization, particularly among older adults and people at higher risk.
It says flu activity across Ontario is increasing earlier than usual this year, making vaccination an important step in protecting against severe illness and reducing the spread of respiratory viruses.
RCDHU Medical Officer of Health Dr. Jason Morgenstern says getting vaccinated before respiratory illness season reaches its peak can help provide protection when it is needed most.
COVID-19 and flu vaccines will be available to high-risk and priority populations beginning the week of October 13.
Starting October 26, vaccination will be available to anyone six months of age and older who lives, works or attends school in Ontario.
Pharmacies are a primary source for COVID-19 and flu vaccines for people aged two and older, while residents can also contact their health-care provider. RSV and pneumococcal vaccines may be available through health-care providers for eligible older adults.
RCDHU will also hold community vaccination clinics throughout Renfrew County and District. The clinics will offer flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccines, with pneumococcal vaccines also available this year for eligible residents.
Clinics beginning October 13 will be limited to high-risk and priority populations before expanding to everyone six months and older on October 26. RSV and pneumococcal vaccines will remain available only to people who meet their specific eligibility requirements.
Residents are encouraged to book RCDHU clinic appointments in advance through the health unit’s online booking system. Walk-ins will be accepted as space allows.
More information about vaccine eligibility, clinic dates, locations and appointments is available through RCDHU, or by calling 613-732-9436 or 1-833-773-0004.
