Renfrew County is bucking the trend when it comes to the huge drops in the housing market being experienced by the bigger cities.
The Ontario Real Estate Association says the rate of home sales in August was the lowest its seen in the last 25 years. However, locally, the numbers are much more stable.
There were 128 properties sold in Renfrew County last month (August), compared to 134 in August of 2025.
While that is a four and a half percent drop, Nicole Walters, President of the Renfrew County Real Estate Board says it’s still been a good year overall.
So far in 2026, 1078 properties have sold, down only slightly from the five year average of 1124 homes.
Walters adds one trend that has developed locally is multi-generational purchases, such as parents buying properties with their adult children.
The cost of a home in Renfrew County varies wildly from one end of the County to the other and is influenced by such things as the prevalence of waterfront, and the proximity to the city.
In Greater Madawaska, the average home price is edging close to $1.3 million, compared to a low of $315,000 in Chalk River.
