A shelter-in-place advisory issued for Deep River following a serious incident Wednesday has been lifted, but police are continuing to investigate.
The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. Sept. 9 in the area of McElligott Drive. According to OPP Media Relations Officer Mike Mahon, one person was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The Ontario Provincial Police and Deep River Police Service are asking residents to remain vigilant and avoid the area of Golf Course Road and McElligott Drive, between Banting Drive and Granite Lane.
A precautionary shelter-in-place order was issued by police on Wednesday, which lasted until Thursday afternoon.
While the order was in effect, school buses were cancelled and classes at Mackenzie Community School and St. Mary’s School were cancelled on Thursday, and Deep River and District Health temporarily reduced its services and closed its primary care building.
Police say an increased presence will remain in the area while the investigation continues. Mahon says there’s no estimate at the moment for how long offices will remain in the area.
He adds that no arrests have been made, but police don’t believe there’s any current threat to the public at this time.
The investigation is being led by the Deep River Police Service, with assistance from the OPP Crime Unit and officers from the Upper Ottawa Valley and Bancroft detachments.
While officers continue to investigate the situation, Mahon says residents with information that could help police are encouraged to reach out.
Anyone sharing footage with the OPP is urged to reference incident number E261314886. They can contact the detachment through the OPP’s toll-free line at 1-888-310-1122.
Anonymous tips can be provided through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or through Valley Tips.
For residents in Deep River, St. Mary’s OLGC School in Deep River will be open again on Friday, September 11th, with school bus transportation expected to operate as normal. A mental health and wellness team from the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board will be on-site as well as a representative from Victim Services to help support students and staff members.
Mackenzie Community School will also be open on Friday with regular classes, normal bus routes, and extra mental health support on hand for students and staff members. Deep River and District Health has also resumed normal services.
