Sentencing has been imposed in a long court battle involving the current and former owners of Cobden’s Bona Vista campground.
As first reported by the Eganville Leader, Louise and Richard Deschambault were found guilty on August 25 of charges relating to a near seven-year dispute with Denis and Bonnie Seguin, which began after the Deschambaults sold the camp to the Seguins in 2019.
Leader reporter Bruce McIntyre explains that the Deschambaults were originally allowed to live in a trailer on the property following the sale, but that relationship would sour following numerous disagreements and harassment of the Seguins that led to the OPP being called to respond more than 100 times.
In a victim impact statement, Bonnie Seguin noted that the incidents had escalated since 2019 and that she feared further incidents would lead to someone being seriously hurt.
McIntyre was also asked to provide a victim impact statement depicting actions taken by the Deschambaults that led to his original reporting on the case being purposefully withheld from publishing in fear of violent repercussion.
The crown attorney had recommended Louise spend 45 days in custody while Richard would be held for 180 days. Both will also face three additional years of probation, and McIntyre notes that they have to adhere to a number of conditions afterwards.
Sentencing in the case was held on Thursday, September 3rd.
