Time flies when you’re having fun! Alan Nanne’s family has occupied its farm, located at the mid-point between Arnprior and Pakenham for six decades. The 700 acre spread, Nandale Farms, is home to seventy head of dairy cattle. Nanne says over that time, milking has changed from stool-and-bucket, to the tie-stall model, to robotics- but Alan personally prefers the days when the cow was royalty. Today’s challenges include rising costs outside of the supply-management sphere. But Nanne believes the regulated system is the fairest way to satisfy market demand while maintaining the quality product to which Canadians are accustom. He says U.S. incursion is thus far limited to an “ingredients” component. Alan says it’s too early to say whether his four year-old daughter will be the fourth generation at Nandale Farms; when the time comes, that will be her decision.
