There’s been a lot of public education about ice safety following the unfortunate December demise of two youths who fell through thin ice on the Rideau River.
The Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority is broadening our knowledge with the following advice:
Residents are being urged to use extreme caution when venturing out on to ice covered waterways, as water levels across the Mississippi Valley watershed are slowly receding.
Fluctuating water levels may cause pressure ridges and unsafe ice conditions in unusual locations throughout.
Hypothermia is a major concern for anyone playing in areas where they could potentially fall into open water.
Stay off all ice covered water bodies and remind children about the dangers of playing on or near ice covered surfaces or fast flowing water in ditches and smaller creeks.
