Things have normalized in Carleton Place today following the containment of a downtown gas leak stemming from the accidental rupture of a gas line in the community Tuesday afternoon.
A contractor working on the downtown reconstruction project broke a larger pressurized gas line, spewing natural gas into the air.
There was intensive noise associated with the rupture, and the evacuation of 25 dwellings in the vicinity was required.
Carleton Place Fire Chief Pascal Meunier tells Oldies 107.7 the incident was handled by firefighters and Enbridge crews.
Meunier says the affected area centred around Franklin and Emily Streets, and the incident took about two hours to clear.
The Chief says firefighters released the area to Enbridge crews about 730PM Tuesday.
Meunier says Enbridge Gas crews continued the reactivation of service to the affected dwellings into Wednesday morning.
He says if residents have any questions about the matter, they should call Enbridge Gas at 1-866-763-5427.
CAO Diane Smithson says project-related issues should be called to the attention of Dave Young at Town Hall.
