The Ontario government has partnered with Rogers Communications and Apple to provide iPads with free wireless data. School boards will determine requirements for student eligibility to receive an iPad.
The devices are being purchased and distributed by Ontario school boards, pre-equipped with a free Rogers LTE wireless data. The free Rogers wireless data will be available until the end of June. Rogers is allowing eligible households to sign up for high-speed Internet with no overage fees for $9.99 monthly.
Minister of Education, Stephen Lecce, says this will ensure every child regardless of ability, geographic or socio-economic circumstance can continue their learning while schools are closed.
This week Ontario school boards started distributing iPad to students who don’t have either the technology or the internet they need to access the Learn at Home program. So far over 21,000 devices will be sent to those in need.
The province has also accelerated the delivery of broadband internet access, to be in every high school in Ontario by September of this year and elementary schools by September of 2021.
