November 11th, 1918. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, marks the end of the First World War hostilities, with the official end being marked by the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28th, 1919.
Every year, we honour those who have fought for our rights and freedoms since then, and this year is no different.
The Royal Canadian Legion’s 2026 Poppy Campaign is well underway and the Arnprior Legion Branch 174 is right up there with them.
The campaign normally begins about a week or so prior to November 11th, however, that caused some issues with staggering starts throughout the country.
This year, the campaign began on October 24th and now, nationally, the campaign will begin on that day from now on.
As the campaign gets into full swing, Vic Garbutt, President of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 174 here in Arnprior says they need all the help they can get.
With businesses scattered across the Arnprior and McNab/Braeside areas, the manpower is needed to ensure things run smoothly.
A lesser known fact is the Poppy Campaign doesn’t support the local Legion at all. All proceeds collected go directly to supporting local veterans individually.
The Poppy Campaign has been running for over 100 years, with the Royal Canadian Legion celebrating it 100 years itself this year.
The point of the campaign is to pay our respects and tribute who gave so much to give us the lives were so used to now.
The Poppy Campaign runs every year, however the needs of veterans are felt all year round. The Legion helps those dealing with the fallout from the trauma of war, but they also need help to do so.
Volunteering is a great way to support the local organization do what they do best and you don’t need to be a veteran to be a Legion member.
Volunteers, veterans and Legion members will be scattered throughout our communities across Canada with Poppy boxes looking for your support.
If you’re ever unable to find one, visit your Legion’s branch during their business hours and they’ll be more than happy to help.
The Legion has multiple options of poppies available. Poppy centers, replacement pins, lawn ornaments and more.
During the campaign, we’re only expected to give a little and it’s a small ask for those who have given so much.
