The Renfrew County and District Health Unit has released a new five-year strategic plan outlining its priorities for public health services and organizational development through 2031.
Called Forward Together: Strategic Plan 2027-2031, the document establishes four key priorities intended to guide the health unit’s decisions and operations over the next five years.
The plan was developed with input from health unit staff, community members, partner organizations and Board of Health members.
The four priorities include Future Ready, Public Health Excellence, People and Culture, and Partnerships and Communication.
Under Future Ready, the health unit plans to make greater use of technology, data and innovation to improve efficiency, expand access to information and services, and strengthen decision-making. The plan also emphasizes responsible technology use, including cybersecurity and privacy protections.
Public Health Excellence focuses on delivering responsive, evidence-informed programs that address community needs and advance health equity. Among the goals are strengthening chronic disease prevention, improving emergency preparedness and adapting services to the geographic, demographic and social needs of the region.
The People and Culture priority aims to support staff through continued learning, stronger leadership and a healthy, inclusive workplace. The health unit also wants to improve its organizational capacity through technology, standardized practices and collaboration.
The final priority, Partnerships and Communication, focuses on strengthening relationships with community organizations, residents and other partners. The plan calls for more opportunities for residents to help shape public health priorities, along with improved communication to support informed decisions and coordinated action.
The health unit serves approximately 117,000 people across nearly 15,000 square kilometres, including Renfrew County, the City of Pembroke, the Township of South Algonquin and most of Algonquin Provincial Park.
In a joint statement, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Jason Morgenstern, Chief Executive Officer Heather Daly and Board of Health Chair Joanne King said the plan reflects the organization’s commitment to evolving alongside the communities it serves.
They described it as a roadmap for the future of public health in the region, with the priorities intended to guide decisions, focus resources and create lasting value for residents.
The health unit’s vision remains “Optimal Health for All,” with the new plan intended to strengthen its ability to prevent illness, promote health, respond to emerging challenges and improve the well-being of the communities it serves.
The full strategic plan is available through the Renfrew County and District Health Unit’s website.
