Advanced voting is under way and it’s a mad dash to election day. WOW FM reporters reached out to candidates running for seats around the council table in Greater Madawaska, to give them the opportunity to share their platform with you, the voter.
In this article, you will be able to read the platform of Wendy MacFarlane running for a seat on council in the Township of Greater Madawaska. This is her submission.
I believe effective representation begins with positive relationships, trust, and strong community connections. I hope to serve as the voice and conduit for residents as the Councillor for Ward 3. I am committed to being available to listen to ideas, concerns, and questions so that I can better understand what the community needs and wants. I aim to be a strong voice at the table to represent those priorities when issues arise, decisions are made, and grants become available.
Transparency and open communication are essential. Residents should be informed about township matters, upcoming votes, council meetings, decisions, spending priorities, and how every tax dollar is used responsibly. I also want municipal communication to be inclusive: residents who lack high-speed internet or a computer, or who are not comfortable with social media, should not be left behind. Mailouts, phone calls, and in-person meetings can help ensure everyone has the information they need.
A strong community offers accessible activities and programs for all ages, (including youth), that support physical health, mental health, and overall well-being. Living in a rural area should not mean we have to drive an hour for every activity and service. Supporting local shopping, tradespeople, professionals, entrepreneurs, and small businesses strengthens everyone.
My education and career as a counsellor in schools has provided me with skills that can be directly helpful in this role. Active listening, problem solving, and a positive solution-focused approach will be beneficial as I collaborate with the team. I am also keenly aware of the importance in being inclusive for residents of all ages, abilities, perspectives, and backgrounds.
My vision is for the residents of Ward 3 to feel that their tax dollars are working for them and that all areas of the township, all three wards, are respected and treated fairly.
Working together as a team with council , the mayor, and staff will ensure that Greater Madawaska will feel united as a township. Together we are stronger. By building relationships, communicating openly, and working collaboratively, we can strengthen our sense of community.
