Advanced voting is under way and it’s a mad dash to election day. WOW FM reporters reached out to candidates running for seats around the council table in Greater Madawaska, to give them the opportunity to share their platform with you, the voter.
In this article, you will be able to read the platform of Allison Holtzhauer running for a seat on council in the Township of Greater Madawaska. This is her submission.
OUR COMMUNITY. OUR FUTURE.
Making Greater Madawaska Even Greater!
I am one of the lucky ones who grew up in Griffith and Matawatchan, and now I have the privilege of raising my son here.
I truly believe our area is one of the most beautiful places in the world, filled with hidden treasures and opportunities.
We are a rural municipality with unique needs and tremendous potential. I am running for Council because I want to build on what we already have and explore opportunities to make Greater Madawaska even greater, especially Ward 3.
Here are a few opportunities I would like to explore:
1. Better Communication and Public Engagement
Not everyone uses social media or is comfortable with computers. I would like to see Council agendas posted in community halls and shared through local service groups, giving residents more opportunities to ask questions and provide input before decisions are made. I would also like to review Council meeting times to encourage greater participation.
2. Housing Opportunities
With housing shortages affecting many families, I would like to explore ways to make secondary dwelling units easier and more affordable to establish, with less unnecessary bureaucracy.
3. More Recreation Opportunities
I would like to explore re-establishing a recreation committee to encourage greater use of our rink and recreational facilities.
As a former swimming instructor, I would also love to see swimming lessons return throughout Greater Madawaska. With so many lakes and waterways, swimming is an essential life-saving skill.
These are just a few opportunities worth exploring.
I am not suggesting everything needs to change. We have wonderful people, organizations, and facilities already. By listening, working together, and building on our strengths, we can make our communities even better.
It would be an honour to represent Ward 3.
I would truly appreciate your support!
