The K&P Trail is roughly 180km in length stretching from downtown Kingston to the Town of Renfrew and runs right through Lanark County.
The Kingston & Pembroke Railway ran from Kingston to Renfrew and never actually connected to Pembroke since Canada Central connected to Pembroke first, making the line moot.
Canadian Pacific Kansas City, then Canadian Pacific, took over the line in the early 1900’s and ended all rail service by 1961. Any remaining usage of the rail ended in 1986 and all the rails were then removed. The municipalities then began slowly purchasing and converting the rail sections into trails and in December of 2007, Kingston officially opened the very first section of the K&P Trail.
Then, in December of 2025, the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) signed agreements with Frontenac, Lanark and Renfrew Counties to upload the ownership and responsibilities to each municipality.
Last week, the county announced on social media that it would be officially acquiring the Lanark Highlands section of the trail from the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) as of end of day, today, October 13th, 2025.
Trail users won’t notice any significant difference, as the county is still working on plans and regulations for use. The county will share any information on future changes as any plans work their way through county council.
Lanark County will be installing signage along the trail within Lanark Highlands to indicate the new ownership of the trail and the recommended guidelines on trail use.
Any issues should be shared with the county by calling 613-267-1353 or emailing roads@lanarkcounty.ca.
Any concerns relating to users breaking any local or provincial laws, should contact their local OPP.
Any more information about trail usage including commercial access and usage can be found on the county’s website.
