It’s their home away from home while they strive to meet their hockey goals.
Billet families across Canada give temporary homes to players who travel, either domestically or internationally, to follow their dreams of becoming the next hockey great, and Arnprior is no different.
Most recently, Cal Forshee, a defenceman for the Arnprior Packers, moved to town this summer to join the team and is staying with local billet family, Mayor Lisa McGee.
Donaven Welk, Co-owner and General Manager of the Arnprior Packers says players just become part of the family.
During the grand re-opening of the Nick Smith Centre, Forshee spoke with our reporter. He says Canada’s been extremely welcoming.
Forshee’s father is from Toronto and although he initially tried to join teams in the GTA, he said Arnprior’s been a great fit.
Speaking with Welk, he believes a good home life transfers to success on the ice.
If someone is wanting to become a second home for a player, keep your eyes peeled on local social media pages. Welk says that’s been the most efficient way to communicate with families and players alike.
The Packers home opener is this Friday, September 18th at the Nick Smith Centre. They take on the Glengarry Brigade.
