Having a family member or loved one in palliative care can be one of the most difficult times in one’s life, but a couple of doctors at Renfrew Victoria Hospital want to make that time a bit more comfortable.
Doctors Tara Avelino and Anthony De Jesus decided to give back to the community that they’ve helped treat for over a decade now. Celebrating 10 years with RVH, Dr. Avelino and Dr. De Jesus came up with an idea to raise funds for the palliative care department at the hospital. They grew out their hair for an entire year, collecting donations to completely shave their heads on their 10th anniversary and September 4th was that day.
Dr. De Jesus says they’ve grown connected to the community over their decade here and want to give back.

That Friday, the Renfrew Victoria Hospital Foundation held their “Shave The Date” celebration. With buzzers and scissors in hand, friends and family helped cut and trim the hair off their heads.
In the end, more than $6,645.00 was raised for the palliative care unit and all the hair was donated to Angel Hair for Kids to make wigs for children going through medical treatments.
