With harvest season fast approaching, local health officials are keeping a keen eye on the food that’s heading from the farm to the table.
The Renfrew County and District Health Unit says some items available at your local farmstead’s laneway require more scrutiny than others.
Fresh uncut fruits and vegetables, pure maple syrup and honey, and eggs produced on the property do not need to be inspected before being sold. However, public health inspectors will need to check jams and jellies, pickled vegetables, and baked goods that do not require refrigeration, as per provincial regulations.
While those prepared items can be made in a home kitchen, they will require an inspection and approval from the RCDHU before being sold.
Local businesses are urged to reach out to the RCDHU at 613-732-3629 Ext. 505 or by email for more information or for any questions, including requirements for items not listed above.
