Local students are returning to school this week, and representatives from the local English public and Catholic school boards are offering some advice for parents and students who are anxious about coming back.
Students at schools within both the Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB) and Renfrew County Catholic District School Board (RCCDSB) start their 2025-26 school year on Wednesday, September 2nd.
Kristen Niemi, the Chief Executive Officer for the RCDSB, says it’s important for parents to make sure their children understand that it’s normal to be nervous going into a new school year.
In terms of coping strategies, she suggests asking kids what has helped them navigate that anxiety in the past.
She also suggests walking through kids’ specific concerns and helping them identify potential solutions.
Heidi Fraser, superintendent of educational services with the RCCDSB, echoes similar sentiments, saying anxiety is normal and natural, especially for major milestone transitions.
Fraser also suggests parents should listen to their children’s concerns and complaints first before offering solutions, and to contact their school to help alleviate their worries.
Both Niemi and Fraser hope all students across Renfrew County have a good start to their school year.
