The Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) has extended its water safety statement into August 7th as a precaution.
In a social media post, the MVCA says water levels throughout the Mississippi River watershed have begun to stabilize in some areas and continue to rise in others as runoff from last weekend’s heavy rainfall makes its way through the area.
The Township of Mississippi Mills is recommending residents use extreme caution around rivers, streams and shorelines; however, flooding is not expected.
Conservation experts are recommending residents to closely watch water levels and take the necessary precautions to protect their property by:
- Ensuring sump pumps are clear, in good working condition and have a backwater valve.
- Having a portable generator and backup pump available.
- Ensuring downspouts are clear and the outlet is at least 3 meters from any structure.
- Removing or securing items that might float away if flows increase.
- Keeping emergency phone numbers handy.
- Familiarizing yourself with your municipality’s emergency preparedness plan.
