It’s going to get even hotter before it cools off.
Environment Canada says the heat wave gripping parts of Ontario will peak on Tuesday, with humidex values in the Ottawa Valley to hit 42 degrees.
Cooler air is expected to move in either Wednesday evening or Thursday evening.
According to Environment Canada senior climatologist David Phillips, humidity plays a major role in how the body handles hot weather.
Phillips said humidity is always present in the atmosphere, but people notice it most when levels rise and create uncomfortable conditions.
He explains that the body cools itself through sweating, but high humidity makes that process less effective because sweat cannot evaporate as easily.
Phillips said heat and humidity can lead to health concerns including fatigue, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Officials recommend frequently checking on older adults, those living alone and other people at higher risk of heat illness.
