The Renfrew County Catholic District School Board has approved a balanced $95.3-million budget for the 2026-27 school year, with investments aimed at supporting student achievement, mental health, special education and Catholic faith formation.
Bob Schrader, chairperson of the RCCDSB, says he is happy overall with the budget, which he says focuses heavily on student wellness, as well as curriculum and fiscal responsibility.
The spending plan includes funding for literacy and numeracy initiatives, Indigenous education, experiential learning and school infrastructure, while allocating $15.3 million to special education and $9.2 million for school condition improvements.
One of the more interesting line items in the budget is the funding set aside for student wellness, which Schrader says is becoming increasingly critical, especially since COVID-19, the effects of which some students in the system are still feeling.
Schrader also says the budget addresses rising operational costs despite ongoing funding pressures, including shortfalls in sick leave, information technology and special education. Keeping schools modern in terms of technology is also a major challenge — and a costly one.
Attention to Christian faith teachings still remains a critical aspect of the education offered by the Board, and Schrader points out that a significant portion of the overall budget is earmarked to maintain that focus for students and staff alike.
Schrader goes on to say the financial plan reflects the board’s commitment to meeting students’ academic, spiritual and well-being needs while remaining compliant with provincial funding requirements.
