In the 1990s, Canadian pet ownership surged, and specialty pet stores began expanding beyond food and toys to grooming, training, and boutique accessories. Pet Valu was among brands that introduced the “superstore” model — wide aisles, grooming salons, and veterinary kiosks. The concept aligned with the growing humanization of pets, where dogs were treated even more so as family members, driving demand for premium retail experiences. The shift of Pet Valu from corporate to a franchisee model occurred following the company’s acquisition by Roark Capital in 2009, and the logic of local ownership has been beneficial both in strengthening community connections, and facilitating growth. Franchisees provide low turnover rate and a strong owner-operator commitment. Katelyn Henry is the Pet Valu store manager in both Renfrew, and more recently Arnprior- and serving the two communities, she’s well-aware of the behavioural similarities and differences of each. Katelyn would go so far as to suggest Arnprior is the more feline friendly of the two towns.
The Arnprior Pet Valu is located at the corner of Daniel and Arthur Streets, across from the Arnprior Mall.
