Dandelion Foods in Almonte has been ahead of the curve for quite some time. “Proudly Canadian, Proudly Local” could be described as its mantra since the store’s inception in 2014. Proprietor Meg Petitpas says she has noted an increase in traffic since the threat of tariffs has arisen, as customers come to make more discerning choices. Consistent with a trend that identifies “Product of Canada” materials, Dandelion Foods has them clearly marked. Obviously there’s more local produce to coincide with the growing season, as that percentage reaches a peak around 75%. The radius of locally-grown items ranges from Almonte to Arnprior.
Meg says the Supplements Section is Dandelion’s Canadian “strong suit”, with 85% of the brands in stock being domestic. Petitpas pledges to absorb tariff-related increases as much as possible, but hopes the situation will prove temporary. Of necessity there’s a dearth of product for those with special needs diets, as vegan and other items are manufactured stateside. Dandelion Foods, 451 Ottawa Street, Almonte.
