The Mississippi Mills Fire Protection Service warns that grass fires are bad enough without being given a helping hand.
The fire department recently responded to several fires caused by discarded cigarettes and brush piles becoming out of control.
Your help is needed in adhering to these important reminders:
Do not throw cigarettes butts out of vehicle windows. A lit cigarette can easily ignite dry grass and vegetation, thus leading to wildfires.
Check weather conditions and avoid burning on windy days.
Clear a safe perimeter around the brush pile to prevent the fire from spreading.
Never leave a burning brush pile unattended. Keep water and extinguishing tools nearby.
Ensure the fire is completely out before leaving the area.
