Federal Liberals elected Mark Carney to lead their party into the next election in a resounding first-ballot victory yesterday.
This brings an end to an unusually short, two-month long leadership race called to replace outgoing leader Justin Trudeau and clears the path for an expected early election call.
Carney captured 85.9 per cent of the vote. Former finance minister Chrystia Freeland came in a distant second.
Premier Doug Ford congratulated Carney on X (formerly Twitter), saying “Together, let’s unleash the Canadian economy and make our country more secure by building big, bold projects – starting with the Ring of Fire
It’s not clear when Carney will be sworn in as prime minister.
