We hope you are enjoying the Civic Holiday Weekend- the unofficial second last long weekend of a Canadian Summer season!
Ottawans know it as Colonel By Day; in Grey County, it’s Emancipation Day Weekend- as Owen Sound was the terminus of the Underground Railway from slavery to freedom, and Torontonians assume the rest of the Province follows their convention of naming it “Simcoe Day.”
There’s the rub. It is a Provincial Statutory Holiday, although most Federally-regulated industries have secured it as a contractual day through negotiation or convention.
It’s the case with Oldies 107.7, and our companion myFM sisters, where we pause our broadcast day by swapping the statutory Federal Remembrance Day in exchange. We’ll be back, live and local- at 6AM tomorrow!
Joining us in a day off is the Beer Store.
The Arnprior LCBO outlet (who only recently welcomed customers back) is open today from 11AM to 6PM. During the recent hiatus, you no doubt discovered the out-of-town “agency” locations for your shopping pleasure- and sales at these sites coincide with their regular hours of operation!
Banks and financial institutions honour the day by closing (although also technically federally-regulated), the first Monday in August has been “Bank Holiday” in Merry Old England since the Romans first minted coins.
Cannabis stores are only legally required to close on Christmas Day- and if that gives you the munchies, you can shop reduced hours at Arnprior Metro and No Frills, which are each open 8AM to 6PM today. Giant Tiger is open 8AM to 5PM.
Shoppers Drug Mart on Elgin Street is open today from 8AM to 10PM.
There is no municipal closing bylaw regulating retail, so shopping may be a patch-work of pleasure and aggravation.
Recreation Programming at the Nick Smith Centre takes a break. Town Hall is closed, and Municipal Collections that would have occurred today jump to Tuesday.
Postal Works thank CUPW for the negotiated holiday; mail delivery and counter service resume Tuesday.
Happy what did we call it again day? Enjoy!
