It may start with the best of intentions, but Megan Quinn of the Nature Conservancy of Canada, says dumping your compost in the Gillies Grove Nature Reserve is not all that helpful, if your give it a second thought.
Its the primary cause of the introduction of invasive species into Arnprior’s jewel.
Garden waste puts flora compatible with old growth, like trilliums, trout lilies and blood root at risk of being pushed out of the forest floor.
The NCC biologist says left unchecked the invasive species will alter the forest floor and change the characteristics that support the Old Growth Forest.
Maintaining this internal balance is a year-round battle for NCC staff, but on this Thursday’s special occasion, the public is invite to help in what is essentially an educational exercise.
If you’re eager to lend a hand you must register in advance.
Show up in sufficient time in advance of the 10AM start so you can clean your foot ware at the Ottawa Street boot scrubber
Quinn says if you can’t attend tomorrow’s event, no problem.
