Renfrew Nipissing Pembroke Member of Parliament Cheryl Gallant believes people should be secure in their homes- and the best way for that to happen is through clear, enforced ownership rules.
That’s the basis of her Private Members Bill, C-222, which is again on the Parliamentary agenda for discussion.
Gallant says that given the absence of property rights in the Charter, Bill C-222 gives landowners the protection from having their properties seized without compensation.
The MP speculates the ruling Liberals are taking advantage of the pandemic to move governance to a more authoritarian model- and in that climate, we can’t be sure of what may happen next.
She says clear title reinforces pride of ownership- but worries there’s another factor in play.
The Federal Government, in need of additional revenue to defray pandemic relief, may be looking at either a Home Equity Tax, or the elimination of the Capital Gains exemption on principal residences.
If that happens, many Canadians, particularly those on fixed retirement incomes, like our seniors, will be forced to sell their homes.
If you see a calculation table for what is termed, “Imputed Rent” on your tax return in the new future, you’ll know the Feds have found a new way to get their hands on your wallet.
While Gallant’s Bill C-222 may not halt these potential cash grabs, the initiative will protect landowners from what is termed “defacto confiscation,” and should be supported.
