Everybody is speculating on what may be included in Wednesday’s (today’s) Speech from the Throne, and critics of Small modular nuclear reactors are hoping the federal government won’t be touting SMRs as part of the solution to climate change.
Critics of SMRs say that developing experimental nuclear reactor technologies will take too long to make a difference on climate change and could prove extremely costly to both public coffers and the national landscape.
A UBC study says SMRs could cost up to ten times more than renewable energy sources such as wind and solar- AND they leave radioactive waste behind.
The group says SMRs would link Canada to a plutonium economy and weapons production, and pose risks to locations and communities across Canada.
