Local MP Cheryl Gallant wants Canada’s Competition Bureau to look into anti-competitive practices of internet service providers in rural Canada. Gallant feels that large telecom providers have hampered development and kept broadband prices higher than they could be. She continues, explaining that there are several practices in use, including charging unreasonable rates for access to poles and building just enough broadband in a region to have it declared served. Gallant explains that leaves the area ineligible for federal broadband funding. She’s calling out the CRTC for turning a blind eye to these practices and has requested the Competition Bureau launch a public interest investigation into Canada’s rural broadband market. Gallant is encouraging residents who would also support an investigation to write to the Commissioner of the Competition Bureau, you can find a link Here
