A couple of surprises clawed their way into 2019 accounts in Carleton Place as the Town was attempting to close its books for the year.
Director of Public Works Dave Young says spring flooding damaged the Gemmill Street retaining wall along the Mississippi River.
The wall protected both a private home about a thirty foot rise from the river, as well as a municipal storm sewer and its absence threatened to undermine a portion of Gemmill Street itself.
The emergency repair cost the municipality $11,500, and the money will be recouped either from a year-end surplus, or taken from reserves once the books are balanced.
The homeowners will pay for their portion of the work, with the understanding that peace of mind is priceless.
