The one day strike by the local members of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario will affect all schools in Renfrew County next Tuesday, not just elementary. The Renfrew County District School Board says that because the ETFO represents some workers in secondary schools as well, they are unable to guarantee and maintain a safe learning experience for students in elementary and secondary schools and so all schools will be closed next Tuesday. The board says the decision to close all schools is not one that was made lightly but one that they believe is necessary in order to preserve student safety. Daycares and before and after school care providers that are located within schools will remain open and parents and guardians are encouraged to contact these operators to determine whether there is any additional space for more children. Board officials say they’re hopeful that a provincial agreement with the ETFO and OSSTF can be reached quickly. Meanwhile, Catholic schools in the county will also be closed due to a one day strike by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association.
