For the first time, a parent whose child died by suicide will receive the Silver Cross. Anita Cenerini has been fighting to get her son military honours since he took his own life in Petawawa a few months after returning from Afghanistan in 2004. Private Tom Welch was 22-years-old at the time and his death was deemed not connected to his service. It took the mother of the former soldier 13 years to get the military and federal government to recognize that his suicide was, in part, to his experiences over sees. In September of 2017 Welch was given the Memorial Cross and his name added to the Book of Remembrance. This year his mother, who lives in Winnipeg, will receive the Silver Cross from the Royal Canadian Legion.
