EMON FRUSTRATED WITH GOVERNMENT OVER BUCK A BEER AND LOSS OF CYCLING FUNDING
8/9/2018 2:06:45 PM

Some members of Renfrew County Council are grinding their teeth over recent announcements by the new Progressive Conservative government. Earlier this week, Premier Doug Ford announced that the province would decrease the lowest legal price of beer to allow brewers to sell 355ml cans for a dollar a beer.   This came as good news to some, but not to Renfrew Reeve Peter Emon, who is frustrated that the price of beer is a priority for the government, when other programs are being scrapped. He references the cap and trade program, which was used to fund active transportation. Emon sits on the county development and property committee, which recently learned that the close to $2 million in funding for active transportation over four years has been cut as a direct result of the cancellation of cap and trade. The county had been applying for that funding to develop the Algonquin Trail and Emon is disappointed.

The county has been granted tens of thousands of dollars through the active transportation funding to develop the trail over the last couple of years. Moving forward, Emon says the committee will have to look at other partnerships to fund the rest of the development.
