FORESTRY STILL A THRIVING BUSINESS: INDUSTRY OFFICIAL 8/9/2017 8:53:14 AM
We will enjoy forests for generations to come. That is from Derek Nighbour, CEO of the Forest Products Association of Canada during a presentation to the Renfrew County Development and Property Committee. Nighbour says forestry is a $67 billion a year industry and rural communities across Canada continue to thrive on these jobs. Locally, good jobs continue to pop up and Nighbour says there is now an easier way to find those jobs in the forestry sector.
Another topic discussed was those who want to end foresting in Algonquin Park. Nighbour says protection doesn't always mean a better outcome. As forests begin to age, insects can come in and take over, causing damage to the trees and wildlife. It should also be noted as well that while harvesitng does take away forest land, for every one tree that is harvested, three trees are planted in it's place. That equals out to 550 million trees planted every year.
