The dangers of Wild Parsnip plants are very real and the County of Renfrew wants you to be safe. The plant is increasingly common along roadside ditches, nature trails, as well as on and surrounding rural and residential properties. The danger is the in sap, which contains chemicals that may cause skin and eye irritation and make the skin prone to burning and blistering when exposed to the sun. The blisters typically occur one to two days after contact with the plant and can cause long-term scarring of the skin. In order to control the situation, County staff will be working within the Intergraded Pest Management Plan to educate workers and the public, and to map and reduce hazardous plants on County owned properties this growing season.
